Preserve Vacation Memories by Mailing Yourself a Postcard

Here’s a simple, charming idea that complements our vacation jars and framed key art projects — and it costs next to nothing. The concept came from my creative husband. On one of our first trips together, while writing postcards to family and friends, he suggested we save one postcard and write it to ourselves. It would serve as a small time capsule, capturing a few favorite moments from the trip that we might otherwise forget.

We loved the idea so much that it became a tradition. Over the years we’ve saved postcards from many vacations, and it’s always a pleasure to flip through them and relive everything from a memorable meal to a funny sightseeing moment. To keep them accessible and on display instead of tucked away in a drawer, I suggested placing the saved postcards in an old vase. We actually repurposed the same vase from our wedding — it originally held wedding sentiment cards — and it now sits in our home filled with travel memories.

Seeing the postcards on display is a lovely, low-effort reminder of our adventures and keeps us excited about planning the next trip. All you need while you’re on vacation is a little spare change — a postcard and a stamp — and you can start your own postcard project. Bon voyage!
