Beach House Summer Prep: Weekend Checklist for a Relaxing Season

Now that spring has arrived, summer feels just around the corner. This will be our first full summer using the beach house (last year we were still tiling all three bathrooms through Labor Day), and our plan is to spend as much time there as possible—both to chip away at the to-do list and to genuinely enjoy the beach.

While preparing the house for summer, we realized we’d been overlooking something important: preparing ourselves.

All the fast food from drives to and from the shore, combined with workouts skipped because we were out of town or exhausted from projects, has taken a toll. So in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day we’re recommitting to getting in better shape for summer. We’re calling the series Beach House Body, and we’d love for you to join us.

We’re not fitness professionals or models—just regular people, and that’s exactly the point. It’s easier to relate to approachable fitness delivered by folks who sometimes fumble the barbell. Each Saturday through summer we’ll share a short video with simple, beginner-friendly workouts we actually enjoy. The goal is fitness that fits real life: doable, fun, and effective for average folks like us.

To get everyone excited for next weekend’s kickoff, we made a brief preview video. Turn the volume up and press play to watch. If your reader blocks embedded video, click through to view it on the original page.

Here’s a preview of the workout variety you can expect. We’ll start with familiar gym staples like simple strength training and core routines.

Then we’ll blend in gentler yoga sessions and higher-energy aerobic segments. One favorite move targets those paint-rolling muscles—handy for anyone who spends time with rollers and trim.

We also created DIY-friendly variations for people who prefer household items to gym gear. No kettlebell? No problem—use a paint can as a weight. The heavier the gallon, the better the resistance.

Many of our “weights” came straight from the garage. Repurposing tools and materials makes workouts practical and relevant—lugs of a tool bag become added resistance during walking lunges, and a box of tiles can turn a standard lunge into a more challenging move.

The series is structured as a complete set, so we recommend following each segment through to the end. If you miss something, return to the videos anytime for a refresher. As the workouts progress they get more inventive, blending practical home-life items with solid, beginner-friendly exercise.

And now, one last thing…

APRIL FOOLS!

If you suspected a prank when we mentioned Sherry working out (podcast fans know she favors “accidental exercise”), you weren’t alone. We hope we fooled a few people, even if only for a second. While regular exercise and cutting back on fast food would be good for us, that particular journey won’t be serialized here.

If you enjoy our April Fools’ antics, here’s a look back at past pranks from our archive—ten years of silliness and creative stunts.

  • 2017 – The launch of our novelty sock line
  • 2016 – An app for swapping out decor items
  • 2015 – A Siri-inspired home decorating assistant
  • 2014 – An inter-household crafting challenge (or was it?)
  • 2013 – “Hush” – our debut music video
  • 2012 – A wildly unnecessary toilet purchase
  • 2011 – Burger’s very own playroom
  • 2010 – A super classy curb appeal upgrade

Wishing you a fun April Fools’ Day and a happy Easter!
