How to Sand and Paint a Modern Chair Red for a Sleek Makeover

A lot of readers asked for details about the thrift-store chair we refreshed for our latest column in R. Home magazine. Here’s a clear, step-by-step account of how we transformed it.

We found this chair at Diversity Thrift in Richmond and paid $10. Once home, the first task was sanding. We used 100-grit sandpaper to remove the semi-shiny finish and get down to bare wood. You can also prime with an oil-based primer to prepare a surface for paint, but because this chair was old and the finish sanded away cleanly, we skipped priming. If you plan to paint a piece white or another very pale color, priming is a good idea to ensure even coverage and true color.

Next we applied three thin, even coats of semi-gloss latex paint in Valspar’s Fabulous Red—the same shade used on our front door. Red often requires an extra coat to reach a true, saturated tone without any pink undertones. For the smoothest finish on furniture, a brush is the best tool. We briefly tried a mini roller, but rollers can leave tiny textured marks, so we returned to a quality paintbrush to achieve a smooth, even surface. You might notice fallen leaves in the background of this photo, which is a reminder that we work well ahead for each column; this project was actually completed last fall for the March/April issue.

After the three coats of semi-gloss red, we let the chair dry thoroughly. We recommend waiting 24–48 hours before regular use to avoid smudges or dents. For pieces that need extra durability—like a frequently used kitchen table—you might add a coat of protective polyurethane. Because this chair functions as an accent piece, we left it with just the semi-gloss paint, which gives a pleasing sheen and a reasonably wipeable surface.

This makeover was fast, simple, and budget-friendly. Total cost was about $25—$10 for the chair plus the paint. If you have semi-gloss paint on hand, you can refresh a thrift-store chair for even less in just a few hours.

You might be wondering what became of the finished chair. R. Home is giving it away to a lucky local reader, so if you live in or near Richmond you may have a chance to take it home. If not, try your own version—this kind of project is straightforward, satisfying, and a great way to add personality to your space.
