We’re not professional photographers, but we’re learning as we go. That’s why we sometimes improvise during makeshift photoshoots at home.

Notice the neon blue cast behind me in that photo? When we shoot our artificially lit kitchen, any natural light that sneaks in often appears blue by comparison. Usually it’s not a big deal, but when a shaft of window light lands on the freshly painted cabinets it creates a subtle blue splash that shows up in the photos. Sherry doesn’t always spot these small issues, but they bother me. See the bluish reflection on the cabinet doors and the side of the peninsula? It’s distracting.

So I grabbed my trusty blanket to block the light coming from the living room while Sherry stayed behind the camera. That simple change got us this shot instead.

The difference is subtle but satisfying. Sherry insisted “it’s exactly the same,” and I may have been called a dork for fussing over it. But I can see the improvement, and I won’t ignore those little lighting inconsistencies. Not on my watch.
