4 Decorating Lessons to Steal from Anthropologie

I love going into Anthropologie. Why? It’s the overall feeling the store creates. Not every item is exactly my taste, and that’s fine. The moment I step inside I slow down, look closely, and enjoy lingering over the details. The place invites you to stay awhile and soak in the atmosphere.

Isn’t that what we all want our homes to feel like? A place that embraces us, calms us, and encourages us to savor the everyday details.

After a recent visit, I thought about what it is specifically about Anthropologie that draws me in and sparks ideas. Since we recently discussed how to find a personal decorating style, I wanted to pull a few simple lessons from the store that can translate into our own homes.

I took some time to analyze why Anthropologie feels so appealing — to see what inspiration I could borrow for creating inviting, unique spaces at home.

So pour a cup of coffee and join me—here are four decorating lessons I took away from Anthropologie.

4 Decorating Lessons from Anthropologie

1. Create ambience.

If you’ve followed this blog, you know I’m drawn to rooms with strong ambience. Ambience is the invisible thread that pulls you into a space and makes you feel something. Even if you can’t name why a room feels right, ambience is usually at work.

Anthropologie creates ambience by engaging multiple senses. Eye-catching displays in weathered cabinets, tactile textiles you want to touch, worn wood textures underfoot, and candles that scent the air—all of these elements combine into a cohesive mood. The result feels personal, creative, and comfortably lived-in.

The more senses you thoughtfully engage at home—favorite safe scents, textured fabrics, colors and patterns that resonate with you—the more your space will feel like yours. Personal sensory choices make a house feel like a home.

2. Be fearless.

Anthropologie isn’t afraid to bend or ignore the usual decorating rules. They take creative risks—unexpected combinations, quirky displays, and playful materials—that make their spaces memorable.

From animal heads on a wall to recycled materials used as decor, the store celebrates imaginative choices. Not every idea will fit in your home, and that’s okay. The point is to ask: what could you try? Look at everyday items with fresh eyes and consider new purposes for familiar objects.

Repurposing, mixing textures, or simply rearranging items in unexpected ways can bring personality and interest into your rooms. Fearless decorating doesn’t mean chaotic—it means thoughtful boldness and willingness to experiment.

3. Express your personality
{and what does that really mean anyway}

“Express your personality” can feel overused, but it remains essential. The challenge is translating that idea into a home that truly reflects you, rather than a showroom replica of a favorite store.

If your space looks like a catalog page, it may be pretty—but it won’t tell the story of your life. Authentic style grows from a curated collection of items you’ve chosen over time: pieces collected on trips, gifts that carry meaning, spontaneous finds that made you smile. Those items serve as snapshots of your life and make your home unmistakably yours.

Anthropologie’s displays often feel like someone’s personal collection—modern, quirky, reinvented, and antique elements blended together. That sense of history and individuality makes the space interesting and inviting.

Instantly buying every item from a favorite catalog gives you a look, but not a narrative. True style develops slowly as you embrace what makes you unique—your experiences, tastes, and the memories you want your home to reflect.

Think about how you can break out of predictable decor. Keep a few classic, functional pieces, but add distinctive accessories that tell your story—objects that aren’t found everywhere and that feel meaningful to you.

4. Details matter.

Anthropologie celebrates small details: ruffles, pom-poms, patterned lampshades, unique buttons, and unexpected trims. Those finishing touches elevate ordinary items into something special.

If your decor lacks thoughtful details, the overall effect can feel flat. You don’t need frills on everything, but intentional small touches show care and set your style apart. Details may take time and creativity, but they make a big difference.

Whether your aesthetic is feminine, rustic, modern, or vintage, identify a handful of signature details that express your taste and consistently weave them through your rooms.

So there you have it. My four take-away decorating lessons from Anthropologie!
