Create a Cozy Bedroom Retreat: Simple Steps for Relaxing Space

Cozy Retreat for Fall

Yesterday morning I woke up and, heading into the kitchen, noticed a definite chill in the house. Is fall here already? That sudden coolness might surprise those still enjoying summer weather. In the Pacific Northwest we’re in that in-between stretch—I haven’t turned the heat on yet, but I’ve seriously considered it.

As I made my way to the kitchen I realized something important was missing: my slippers. The fuzzy slipper-socks I rely on this time of year to keep my feet from freezing were nowhere to be found. Cold feet are one of my least favorite things, so I had to hunt them down. Small conveniences like a cozy throw or knowing where your slippers live really make colder mornings feel easier.

Even if you’re still in shorts where you are, it’s pleasant to imagine the comfort of cooler mornings—unless you prefer the heat, of course.

The coziest bedroom this time of year will be made up of many little comforts, such as:

clean, tidy spaces that make nesting feel comforting
a layered, cozy bed with just the right softness to feel snug
a warm rug or slipper socks for your feet when you step out of bed (do you leap out of bed or drag yourself?)
a robe, sweater or sweatshirt to throw on in the morning
adjustable lighting for reading and dressing, plus good light control for sleeping
a stack of books or magazines by the bed (a basket keeps them tidy)
a folding tray for the occasional breakfast in bed—treat yourself to small luxuries

Take a look at your bedroom today.

Consider what might be missing for the season ahead. Could you add more layers like a beloved fuzzy blanket? Is a rug or a set of curtains needed to warm up the room?

Do you change your bedding for fall—perhaps switching to darker sheets or a different quilt to create a cozier feel?

Think about what would make your bedroom more inviting and comfortable: softer lighting, a bedside basket for books, an extra throw, or a pair of slippers kept within easy reach.

Have fun preparing yourself and your room for a cozy season!
