From Blank Slate to Built Space: A Practical Design Guide

White dining room by Amber Creswell BellThe Design Files

As I mentioned this week, I’ve been moving furniture around and living with different arrangements to get closer to the look I imagine. It’s exciting to experiment, but also a little frustrating to wait to see the full result. I’m impatient to act — everything feels slower in real life than it does on TV.

I know it will take time to make this house what I want — years, probably — and I’m sure many of you can relate. Still, I feel encouraged now that I can picture the finished home. Starting from a blank slate has its own challenges, and it took some effort to settle on the overall vibe and practical ways to achieve it within a reasonable budget and timeline.

Now that many decisions are made and a few more are close to being finalized, it’s just a matter of starting the projects we can do now, budgeting for larger work, scheduling tasks in sensible order, and finding reliable contractors. Even small projects can feel complicated — remodels often become full-time efforts — but this house already gives us a head start with sturdy bones and generous natural light from the big windows. Our job is to make the most of what’s here and enjoy the home as it evolves.

Today I’ve gathered a selection of breakfast rooms for inspiration. Some of these spaces suggest ideas I can see working in our dining area, while others spark different directions. I hope you find a few details here that inspire a refresh or guide a new project in your own home.

Do you listen to your home before making major decorating or remodeling choices?
