It can take a long time to find your rhythm in a new home. If you’re on a budget, balancing other priorities, or the house has unique quirks, it often takes a few years to settle into a comfortable groove.

We’ll have lived here four years this fall, and only now do we feel like the house and we are finally coming together. Moving has always been an ordeal for us, but lately design choices feel easier and more intuitive. That sense of forward motion is very satisfying.

Deciding on the right color palette and style doesn’t always happen immediately. A house can feel like it has its own personality, and the best approach is to listen to what the space seems to want. That process often involves experimentation and small changes until everything feels cohesive.

This older house—she’s got personality—seems to be settling into a refreshed look that feels natural. The updates we’ve made are starting to feel like the right fit for the structure and the light.

Natural wood tones combined with shades of blue, white, and some deep greens create a calm, coastal-inspired palette that suits the house. The overall feeling leans toward a subtle, modern coastal style, and we’re embracing that direction.

I prefer working with a mostly neutral base because it offers flexibility. Blues and whites can be dialed up or down to suit the season, the room, or my mood. That versatility keeps decorating fun and creative.
