Spring and summer style

Do the seasons outside influence how you decorate inside? Beyond swapping seasonal accessories like spring flowers or autumn branches, some people choose furniture, colors and finishes based on the season they prefer or the one that surrounds them most of the year. Your location, climate and personal tastes can subtly shape a home’s overall mood.

I find my preferences shift between spring and fall. In spring I’m drawn to lighter, fresher colors and breezier textures, while autumn nudges me toward warmer, cozier tones. Ideally I create a base palette and furnishings that can transition easily between seasons so the house feels comfortable year-round.

That said, sometimes a particular seasonal style is the most natural choice for a home or region.

What is your home’s seasonal style? Does the house feel like summer, spring, winter or fall? Each season offers a distinct atmosphere: winter and fall can feel intimate and grounding, while spring and summer often bring a sense of lightness and renewal. No season is inherently better—each can be beautiful when it matches how you want your home to feel.

Preferences for seasonal style come from many places. Sometimes it’s simply a love of certain colors or textures. Other times climate, regional style, the architecture of the house, or the furniture you already own will guide the overall look. Seasonal moods and lifestyle—whether you’re more indoorsy or outdoorsy—also play a role.

Some people are naturally drawn to one season’s aesthetic: beachy, sun-drenched rooms for those who love summer, or warm, layered spaces for those who prefer fall. Others, especially in regions with mild climates, aim for a flexible style that flows from one season to the next without a major overhaul.

Think about whether you feel more like a “winter” or a “summer” person. Do you thrive on cozy layers and rich textures, or do you prefer airy fabrics and pale palettes? Recognizing this helps you choose a consistent foundation—walls, major furniture pieces and key finishes—that supports seasonal tweaks like cushions, throws and accessories.

There’s no single correct seasonal style—what matters most is that you love your home and feel comfortable in it throughout the year. When the foundation of your decor is flexible, you can easily refresh a room to reflect the season without starting from scratch.

So, what season is most reflected in your home decor? Do you alter your preferences with the season?
Every spring I find myself admiring light, summery rooms and the fresh colors that come with them.
