Battery-operated Taper Candles

Bring warmth and character to your home with affordable non-electric wall lights and battery-operated candles.

I love quick, inexpensive updates that make a house feel lived-in and cozy. After sharing our fireplace reveal, I promised more details about the new sconces I added, so here’s a clear rundown of how a small change made a big difference in our home. This project was simple, fast, and budget-friendly, yet it instantly softened the room and added personality.

I searched for wall sconces like these for a long time because I wanted to add subtle architectural interest throughout our rooms. Eventually I found a style I loved and installed several in unexpected spots, echoing the charming details often seen in older homes and in inspiration photos that catch my eye.

The candleholders I chose are made of sturdy metal and are very easy to mount—one small nail or screw is all you need. For safety and convenience we use battery-operated taper candles, secured in the holders with a bit of museum putty so they stay put. From start to finish each sconce took less than ten minutes to hang, but the visual impact was immediate.

Our battery-operated taper candles include a remote and timer, which makes it effortless to add a soft glow any night. The convenience of a remote and preset timer means the candles are used regularly—little pockets of light scattered through the house add a comforting, intimate ambiance.

I installed four of these candle sconces in different areas. One black sconce now accents our hallway and complements the other black hardware and barn-style ceiling light. Layering small light sources like sconces, picture lights, and overhead fixtures creates depth and a cohesive look in a transitional space.

A while back we added gold battery-operated picture lights above a hallway cabinet and even lined the cabinet back with peel-and-stick wallpaper for a small but impactful update. Little lighting touches like these are a low-effort way to elevate everyday rooms.

I admit I’m hooked on faux wall lights and flameless candle sconces—they give the look and mood of real candlelight without the maintenance or worry.

One of the sconces sits beside the dining room entrance and adds a welcoming glow to that corner of the living room. It’s a small detail, but it gives the space a finished, curated feel.

In short: you can achieve the charm of wall lighting without rewiring or hiring an electrician. These non-electric sconces and flameless candles are an affordable way to introduce character and cozy light into your home.

Non-electric wall sconces and candle ideas for a similar look

If you want the same layered and collected look, consider mixing metal sconces in black or brass with flameless taper candles or small pillar candles. Use museum putty to secure candles in place and choose candles with remote or timer functions for easy daily use.

Battery-operated candles I’ve used:

I keep a few styles on hand—tealights for small fixtures, taper candles for traditional candleholders, and ivory or white flameless pillars with flickering wicks for a realistic glow. The remote and timer options are worth the slight premium for the convenience.

If you try this lighting idea at home, I’d love to see. Share a photo on social media or in a community group—I always enjoy seeing how small updates transform a room.

If you prefer a simpler way to add sparkle without additional wall fixtures, copper string lights with a remote and fade settings create a cozy, layered effect that works year-round.

My latest book: Dwelling Well — a monthly journal to nourish your home, body, and soul

My new journal, Dwelling Well, launches soon. It’s a flexible, undated monthly journal designed to help you create nourishing routines and a more intentional home life. If you pick one up, consider joining the community project “A Year of Dwelling Well” to use the journal together.

I’ve started filling mine out and already find the prompts helpful. Because it’s undated, you can begin at any time and shape the year to suit your schedule and goals.

How we use the Dwelling Well journal

I’ve shared a brief video walkthrough on Instagram showing how my family plans to use the journal. The highlights demonstrate simple ways to incorporate short moments of reflection and practical routines into everyday life for a calmer, more intentional year.
