Hallway Cabinet Ideas: Battery-Powered Library Lights & Removable Wallpaper

I enjoy finding simple, affordable ways to add character to a room. This past weekend we made two small updates to our hallway that significantly increased its charm and warmth.

The built-in cabinet sits in a compact but well-used zone between the kitchen, bedrooms and other areas of our home — a little like a butler’s pantry if you want to imagine it that way. It’s a functional spot that benefits from a few thoughtful touches.

When we moved in three and a half years ago we dreamed up big, costly renovations for this hall. Instead, incremental, affordable changes have made the biggest difference in how the space feels. Over time we’ve refreshed paint, updated the cabinet, removed the sliding doors and installed new black hardware. This weekend we added two battery-operated, library-style wall sconces and applied peel-and-stick plank wallpaper to the back of the open shelving to give the cabinet more depth and texture.

Both additions were easy to install and had an immediate, uplifting effect on the space.

I’ve admired library-style wall lights for a long time, but many options are far pricier than I want. I found affordable battery-operated versions and was surprised by the low cost. They’re dimmable, which helps set a cozy mood in the hall.

When the lights arrived I hesitated over the finish and scale, but given the price I decided to try them. They installed like hanging a picture and immediately delivered the gentle, layered lighting I wanted. Small decisions like this can feel uncertain at first; step back after completing the change and judge the overall effect. Often the room comes together in a way that’s better than you expected.

The peel-and-stick plank wallpaper felt like a low-risk update, so I tried it. Once applied to the back of the shelves it instantly added warmth and visual interest. Because it’s removable, it’s an easy way to experiment without long-term commitment or major expense.

For a while the cabinet served as a catch-all with baskets on every shelf, which worked well. Now I prefer the open shelving for cookbooks, bowls and decorative pieces. The shelf styling feels more intentional and the added lighting highlights the objects on display.

Small layers — a runner, a few art pieces, baskets and soft lighting — have transformed this narrow passage into a pleasant, welcoming part of our home.
