Shiplap Paneling Design Ideas: Styles, Installation Tips & Uses

Fall House Tour - Kitchen Paneled Wall and Command Center - The Inspired Room

One of my favorite architectural details is chunky wood paneling—often called shiplap or tongue-and-groove paneling. It brings warmth and character to a room and always makes me smile.

When we remodeled our kitchen, I was eager to reintroduce the sturdy woodwork I loved from older homes. Adding these elements gradually has made the house feel much more like home. I still hope to add more wood detail as our budget allows.

I imagine painted wood walls and ceilings throughout the whole house, but for now I’m happy with the paneling along this little hallway and in our entry.

Tongue and Groove Paneling

Our tongue-and-groove boards look like the photo above before installation. You can buy them from a lumberyard or have your contractor order them. They’re long pine planks with grooves that lock together for a tight fit. Ours had beadboard detailing on one side, so we chose to install them with the flat side facing out for a cleaner look between the grooves.

The paneling can be installed horizontally or vertically and either painted or left natural. I love the craftsmanship and the solid, substantial feel it gives a room.

Below are a few of my favorite shiplap rooms for inspiration. Do you love shiplap as much as I do?
