Tips for Hosting Guests

I love creating an environment that makes guests feel welcome, comfortable, and able to truly enjoy their time in our home. Preparing by cleaning, arranging and adding small thoughtful touches makes hosting enjoyable for everyone. As I prepare the house for holiday visitors, I find the process itself soothing and rewarding.

If you host guests or have been one, you know how important a welcoming atmosphere is. I’ve learned many of these tips by both hosting and being a guest, so they’re practical and based on real life.

1. Clean the front porch

First impressions matter. Remove unsightly objects and sweep the porch so visitors arrive to a tidy entry. Move tools, tires or clutter out of sight and wipe down the door and handle if they’re dirty. You don’t have to be perfect, but a clean, uncluttered porch says you’re ready to receive guests.

2. Make the inside entry pleasant

Clear shoes, papers and personal items from the area immediately inside the door so guests don’t step into clutter. Treat the entry as a transition from the outside world into your home: add a candle or small vase on an entry table (checking first that guests aren’t sensitive to scents) and keep the space bright and inviting.

3. Pay attention to lighting

Turn on exterior lights if guests arrive after dark. Inside, favor warm lamp light and soft overhead lighting—dimmers are ideal. Replace burned-out bulbs and avoid dark corners, which can feel cold or gloomy. A well-lit home feels safer and more welcoming.

4. Do the sniff test

You get used to your home’s scent, so ask someone else or take a quick walk outside and come back to notice how it really smells. To keep your home smelling fresh:

  • Thoroughly clean kitchens and bathrooms with pleasantly scented products.
  • Vacuum carpets and dust furniture—dirt causes unpleasant odors.
  • Empty trash, clean litter boxes and tidy pet areas.
  • Wash bedding and linens regularly.
  • Groom pets if needed.
  • Light a lightly scented candle or diffuser if appropriate.

5. Prepare the guest bathroom

Whether or not you have a dedicated guest bathroom, prepare the space your visitors will use:

  • Remove personal items such as toothbrushes, hairbrushes and used towels.
  • Clean the sink, toilet and surfaces so the room looks and smells fresh—not clinical.
  • Set out clean, fluffy towels so guests know which to use.
  • Provide a small assortment of toiletries like travel-sized shampoo, soap and extra toothpaste for anyone who forgets something.
  • Place extra toilet paper in easy reach to avoid awkward searching.
  • Add a seasonal touch—flowers in summer or a small wreath at the holidays—to make the space feel special.

6. Make sleeping accommodations comfortable

When guests stay overnight, small touches can make their room feel like a cozy bed-and-breakfast:

  • Provide fresh sheets, extra pillows and blankets.
  • Keep the room neat, uncluttered and welcoming.
  • Crack a window slightly for fresh air if weather permits.
  • Offer a couple of current magazines or books for bedtime reading.
  • Respect privacy in the evenings and early mornings so guests can relax.

7. Communicate clearly

Good communication removes awkwardness. Before guests arrive, brief children on basic manners like knocking before entering rooms and keeping bathroom noise private. When guests arrive, tell them where the powder room is, where to store their things, and what to expect the next morning—breakfast time, whether a bathroom will be available, and any plans for the day. Clear expectations help guests feel comfortable and informed.

8. Keep plans simple and organized

Complicated itineraries often create stress. Plan simple, manageable meals and activities. Keep a discreet checklist of the basic schedule—meal times or small reminders—so you don’t forget essential steps in the rush of hosting. Aim to be organized but flexible so you can relax and enjoy your guests.

9. Focus on your guests

When guests arrive, switch from preparation mode to being a gracious host. Expect small mishaps and avoid drawing attention to imperfections. Laugh off minor problems, keep the mood light, and center conversations on making guests feel welcome rather than dwelling on issues in your home.

10. Plan conversation starters

Attention and genuine interest matter more than perfect food or decor. Think ahead about engaging topics to avoid awkward silences or repetitive small talk. Preparing a few conversation starters can help you lead interesting, inclusive discussions and keep everyone comfortable.
