Southern Living Spring Decorating
From January through April many decorating ideas focus on holidays—Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter—so you see hearts, clovers and bunnies everywhere. Those themed decorations are cute, but if you prefer something subtler or it’s past Valentine’s Day and a bit early for Easter, there are other options that feel more timeless and seasonally appropriate.

On a recent post about getting ready for spring, several readers mentioned they struggle with that “in-between” season when it’s not quite winter but not yet full spring. You may not want to decorate for a specific holiday or to change your whole house from a winter look, yet you want a lighter, fresher feel.
I understand—I’m the same way. When I do decorate for holidays I usually keep things subtle and more about the season than obvious themed motifs. I enjoy elements like bunnies and eggs, but overall I emphasize seasonal shifts—winter, spring, summer, fall—more than holiday-specific décor.

So how do you decorate when you’re not ready for full spring but a snowy winter mantel feels out of place?

My approach is to add small, natural touches that suggest spring without committing to a full seasonal overhaul. A few branches, delicate flowers, potted plants, or a touch of moss can add life and freshness without feeling like a holiday display. These simple changes feel gradual and organic, allowing the home to evolve from winter to spring over time.
I enjoy watching a space shift gradually rather than stripping everything away and reinventing it for each holiday. Adding subtle seasonal accents makes the process enjoyable—small hints of life and color that brighten the room and feel appropriate for the moment.

My mantel has stayed fairly neutral from January up until now, which worked well for winter. As the days warm, I start wanting more life—spring greens and fresher colors. Over the next week or two I’ll be updating the mantel with a few simple additions. I rarely plan every detail; I let inspiration guide those small changes so the result feels natural and unforced.
Do you prefer decorating for specific holidays and themes, or do you lean toward seasonal decorating? There’s no right or wrong—just personal preference.
