Today I’m handing the reins to a friend to share her story of finding contentment at home this autumn. That has been the goal of this series from the start: to show ways we can embrace contentment in the season we’re in, right where we are. It’s easy to miss everyday joy when we overthink, focus on what we don’t have, or make excuses for not doing the things we love.
I love my friend Holly for many reasons (you’ll see one of them — her stairs — at the end of this post). One thing I admire about her is her ability to find beauty and contentment exactly where she is. She’s genuine and refreshingly real. If you don’t know Holly, I encourage you to visit her blog; she’s talented and kind. Welcome, Holly!
Don’t you love when something you’ve liked for years suddenly becomes trendy — or when everyone seems to have something you’ve owned forever? Whether it’s a fabric, a haircut, or a handbag, it’s human to feel a little proud and a little silly. We’re an odd bunch sometimes.

I felt that way about numbering stairs. It wasn’t my original idea — I first saw it in a Pottery Barn decorating-for-kids book years ago — so I wasn’t sure I still wanted to do it once the trend picked up. But when my husband agreed, I decided not to worry about being “too trendy.” Instead, I embraced the idea because I liked it and it really suits our home and lifestyle.
Designer Sarah Richardson shows how mixing fonts and colors can make the numbered stair idea feel fresh and unique. I kept it simple and used vinyl numbers you can find from many suppliers. It was a quick project I completed one afternoon while Henry napped.
Here is my take on the numbered stair trend.
I love the look.
I think the boys like it too — maybe the baby will learn his numbers faster than his big brother did.
The lesson I learned:
Decorate your home the way you want — and enjoy it!
Just enjoy!
Thanks to Holly for being honest and real. On Saturday we’ll host a link-up, so if you’d like to share your own autumn or Thanksgiving posts, bring them along!
