How to Decorate – Ballard Designs Blog
I love creating outdoor rooms almost as much as indoor ones. Designing a comfortable, attractive outdoor space doesn’t have to be costly—use what you already own and add a few thoughtful touches.
The same basic elements of an indoor room make outdoor living both comfortable and inviting:
rugs
furniture
pillows
artwork
mirrors
stools
birdhouses
lanterns
candlesticks
wreaths
plants
lighting
accessories
Shop your home first for items that can work outdoors.
It’s perfectly fine to bring regular indoor furniture and accessories outside when the weather allows. You don’t always need to invest in expensive patio sets—especially if you have a covered porch, live in a mild climate, or only want to use the pieces for occasional gatherings. Indoor furniture can be a great temporary solution for creating a cozy outdoor room; just bring items back inside when bad weather approaches.
Have fun mixing pieces from different rooms or hunting for bargains at yard sales to find unique additions for your outdoor space. To protect cushions and pillows, consider using outdoor fabrics or washable covers. Budget-friendly options include durable indoor-outdoor rugs, plastic tablecloths, or even shower curtains repurposed as cushion covers.
Note: if you leave a cherished sofa out in the rain, it may get damaged—so plan accordingly.
