Self-care is a common topic today, and for good reason.

Some people insist that true well-being or personal fulfillment comes only from stepping away from daily life—taking time away from home for retreats or solitary breaks. They argue that we cannot nurture ourselves within the ordinary routines of homemaking.

I see it differently.

I don’t believe self-care is reserved for escapes. Caring for our home and tending to how we feel in it is itself an essential form of self-care. The small, thoughtful choices we make each day—clearing a surface, bringing light into a room, preparing a nourishing meal—shape how we feel and how we show up in the world.

Being more attentive to our surroundings, practicing mindfulness in daily tasks, and choosing healthier routines at home are practical ways to offer compassion to ourselves. These acts create a supportive environment that benefits not only us but also the people who share our lives.

That said, occasional getaways have their place. Leaving home for a weekend or taking time to travel can be wonderfully restorative. Yet, lasting well-being often grows from slow, steady practices at home—habits that nurture both our bodies and our living spaces. How we care for our dwellings influences our daily mood, long-term health, and the example we set for future generations.
