Settling In: Embracing Fall on Day 9 of the Season

The other day I shared a simple cell phone photo on Instagram — a candid moment from everyday life. It’s a view I see often, and on a particularly wet, gray afternoon it reminded me how easy it is to let gloomy fall and winter weather affect our mood. I try not to let that happen.

I enjoy settling into the house, especially in this season. For me, settling in means paying attention to the mood outside so I can deliberately lift my spirits and fully appreciate what the day offers inside. Noticing the weather helps me make small choices that turn an ordinary, dreary day into something warm and comforting.

We’re fortunate to have large windows that keep the rooms bright much of the time. Still, when clouds gather on one of Seattle’s darkest days and the wind starts to roar, I remind myself not to be pulled into the gloom I can see beyond the glass. Instead, I choose to create light and warmth indoors.

On days like that I move around the house, switching on lamps, lighting candles, and sometimes starting the fireplace. I might bake something comforting or make another cup of coffee. Those small rituals help shift the atmosphere from gray to cozy.

Then I settle into my favorite chair or flop onto the sofa and allow myself to be present. I savor the coziness of this home, the comfort of a safe roof overhead, and the joy of being with the people I love. That simple feeling of gratitude and presence is what I most appreciate about fall at home — it invites mindfulness and an awareness of the everyday blessings around us.
