Coastal Cottage Living Room Makeover: Before and After Reveal

Today I’m excited to share the latest updates to our cozy coastal cottage living room.

When we moved into this home four years ago it came furnished, which made downsizing easier and allowed us to wait on major furniture decisions until the time felt right.

Because this room is small but important, we took our time furnishing it so every piece would feel intentional.

Season by season we used what we already owned to make the room cozy while updating the surrounding spaces, including new flooring and a kitchen renovation that helped shape the room’s look.

This year we reached a new chapter and updated the furniture with pieces we love from trusted brands. You’ll see sources noted in the post where relevant.

New furniture in coastal cottage

We’ve long been fans of the Williams-Sonoma family of brands and their quality—over the years several of our favorite sofas came from them. They’ve proven to be timeless, durable, and to age gracefully through daily life and many moves.

Some of our previous sofas were passed on to family when we downsized, including a slipcovered piece and a leather sofa that continue to get good use.

Seating arrangement

For this refresh we returned to the brands we trust: a Williams‑Sonoma Home loveseat and Pottery Barn chairs and ottomans in coordinated fabrics. The choices were driven by fit, comfort, and durability.

This room functions as a small pass-through keeping room beside the fireplace near the kitchen and dining nook. It’s the kind of snug spot for conversation before or after dinner, curling up by the fire, sipping morning coffee, or getting lost in a book.

When selecting furniture I prioritized pieces that weren’t oversized yet still felt inviting, with performance fabrics that stand up to pets, children, and everyday life.

Textured fabrics and ottomans

After researching options, I chose a striped performance fabric for the loveseat and patterned wingback chairs from Pottery Barn. The wingbacks add height and a bit of drama without overwhelming the space, and their cocooning shape feels perfectly snug here.

Years ago I had a similar pair of wingbacks and ottomans that I missed after selling them—this feels like that comfortable look returning to the room.

Though the furniture is new, I wanted the room to feel classic and collected rather than too matchy. I selected timeless shapes in coordinating (not identical) fabrics, favoring patterns and texture over all solids.

A mix of textures and tones, versatile ottomans for extra seating or footrests, and a durable wool rug in a bronze tone help ground the space and keep it feeling warm and livable.

I paired new Pottery Barn accessories with treasured finds: an antique bamboo cart from my mom, a marble-topped vintage washstand discovered secondhand, and art that holds personal meaning.

I’m thrilled with how the new furniture makes the room feel—cozy, welcoming, and practical for daily family life.

This space came together piece by piece, and like my favorite rooms it will continue to evolve with small tweaks and seasonal updates.

A true sanctuary is never finished; it should reflect the people who live there. This room will continue to tell the ongoing story of our lives as we make it our own.

I’ll share more about furniture and accessory choices and updates as the room evolves. I’m grateful for the partnership that helped bring some of these pieces into our home.
