One of my favorite pastimes is puttering around the house. I mention it often because it’s something I genuinely enjoy. I may not be especially crafty, but I can putter with the best of them. Embracing what you enjoy and the small skills you have makes home life better.
Puttering usually means wandering from room to room, tidying small things, and making little adjustments that add up. When I take the time to make something look nicer, even in a tiny way, it lifts my spirits.
Some days I feel low-energy and would rather stay under the covers. Still, I often compel myself to walk through the house and make one small spot prettier than it was before.
Making something prettier can be simple: reorganize a drawer so the inside looks neat, remove items you don’t love, and group together the things you do. A single drawer filled with only pieces you enjoy is practical and pleasing—you can use the pretty things without worrying they’ll get ruined.
Why do we hesitate to use the items we like and instead let clutter take over? We deserve to live among the things that make us happy. Yes, dishes may chip over time, but that comes with using and enjoying them.
Focus your puttering on small, manageable areas: kitchen counters, a hallway cabinet, a nightstand surface, a dish drawer, a bathroom shelf, a craft cabinet, or a linen closet. Gather pretty containers or baskets to conceal less attractive items. Even ten minutes of attention can transform a space.
Make something pretty today, just for you. Then enjoy it. It will brighten your mood and feel like a small gift to yourself.
