I made a lamp from a small vintage wine barrel I found at a flea market for $14. Inspired by a reclaimed wood lamp project, I thought the barrel would be an ideal base for a new DIY lighting piece.

The finished lamp has a charming, rustic look that works well in a variety of spaces.

Supply list
– Lamp socket and cord (clear cord used here)
– 5 inch harp
– Small vintage wine barrel (about 9 inches tall)
– Wire hanging plant basket (14 inch diameter)
– Finial
– Wire for securing shade
– Edison lightbulb
The build was straightforward. I drilled a hole in the top of the barrel and fed the cord through an existing opening in the back. Following the lamp socket instructions, my husband wired the socket and attached it inside the barrel.

To secure the socket to the barrel I used super glue; while not the most professional method, it has held up well so far.

For the shade I repurposed a wire hanging plant basket. After removing the insert and chains, I simply flipped the basket upside down to create a cage-like lampshade.

I topped the harp with a small black finial and wrapped a bit of wire around the cage and harp to keep the shade secure and stable.

As a finishing touch I added an Edison bulb. Its warm filament glow looks especially lovely through the wire cage, creating an inviting atmosphere in the evening.
I think it turned out so cute—don’t you?
