Kitchens: Subway Tile & Two-Toned Cabinets
I love subway tile. It’s a timeless choice—elegant, versatile, and often budget-friendly. I especially adore installations that run from countertop to ceiling. A full-height subway tile wall creates a strong, clean statement and introduces appealing texture to the space.

White subway tile is particularly beautiful when paired with warm woods, soft colors, or textured accents for contrast. While some homeowners prefer white grout for a crisp, modern aesthetic, a narrow grout line in soft gray or taupe can lend subtle depth and a slightly more relaxed, lived-in look.

If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you might have guessed it—subway tile is part of my own kitchen makeover. After considering many backsplash options, I chose classic white subway tile to complement my multi-toned, highly grained hickory floors. The simple tiles balance the busy floor and bring a fresh, cohesive backdrop to the room.

I’m excited because the subway tile will add texture and personality while brightening the whole kitchen. It’s a change that feels both classic and refreshing—quite literally lighting up the space.

You may also notice these kitchens share another popular element: two-toned cabinets. Mixing cabinet colors is more than a trend—when done thoughtfully it creates visual interest and the sense of a collected, layered style. I’ve used a combination of wood and painted cabinetry in the past and find the result warm and timeless.
I plan to include a two-tone touch in my updated kitchen as well. My main cabinet color this time won’t be white; I’m exploring other hues that will coordinate with the subway tile and my floors. I’ll share more about my color choices and inspiration soon.
