How often have we wished for the chance to slow down, be more present, and spend more time with family or on our homes? This unusual moment is an invitation to make the most of what we’ve been given. Let’s bring some beauty into difficult times.

This season of social distancing offers a chance to nurture ourselves—body, mind, and spirit. We can become more intentional, create an atmosphere of faith over fear in our homes, and practice kindness, service, and care for others.

Here in Washington state we’ve been asked to retreat to our homes for the common good. Schools and restaurants have closed and public gatherings are limited. In that context, we must create a refuge in the midst of uncertainty. But rather than seeing it as a restriction, we can choose to view it as an opportunity: we get to build a refuge, care for our families, and bring light into a hard situation.

When I wrote the book Dwelling, I never imagined that a homebody life would become a necessity for so many of us. The ideas I’ve shared about gathering family, nurturing relationships, and finding community online feel more timely than ever.

None of us pictured a March like this. It isn’t the kind of homebody life we planned for, but it is what we have—and we can make the best of it.

While staying home helps slow the spread of illness, it doesn’t have to stop joy, hope, friendship, kindness, or community. A week ago I felt compelled to bring our community together in a meaningful way. Today I’m inviting you to join our inspired-room community: The HomeBody Gathering Place.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2022:

The world took unexpected and difficult turns after we first extended this invitation. In March 2020 we launched The HomeBody Gathering Place during the initial quarantine, expecting life to return to normal after a short time. Things didn’t go that way.

As events unfolded and challenges grew, it became impossible for us to continue leading the impromptu group the way we had hoped. Still, our desire to build community never went away.

Now, after two and a half years of disruption and change, we’re thrilled to refocus on community. We are relaunching The HomeBody Gathering Place as an affordable subscription with a sustainable structure to offer exclusive benefits for members. Expect community activities, lessons, group challenges, courses, and more. This will be a private, intentional community unlike any we’ve offered before.

The (new) HomeBody Gathering Place is now open for registration for a limited time—a cozy space for inspired-homebody people who want to create sanctuary for their families.

Join the all-new HomeBody Gathering Place today (registration open for a limited time).

Note: I know this is a difficult time and everyone is facing unique challenges. My heart and prayers are with you. This community is one small way I’m choosing to respond. If it serves you, we would love to have you join.

We may be home for an unspecified time, but we don’t have to be lonely. We are all in this together.

Come hang out with friends across the places The Inspired Room community gathers. We love connecting here on the blog and on Instagram stories, and we invite you to join any or all of our private communities.

It’s a warm, positive place to share photos of your home (it doesn’t need to be perfect), ask design questions, show projects, and meet like-minded friends. If you love home design and encouragement, this group is for you.
