When we moved into this house, I began collecting ideas for updating this living room. I imagined everything from a built-in window seat and bookcases to trim work, refinished floors, and a new fireplace surround with an insert for cozy autumn evenings.
I had so many plans, but time and budget required a different approach.
Though we’ve completed several other projects around the house, this room has changed more quietly than I first pictured.
Simple updates have suited this season of life perfectly.
Instead of a full fireplace renovation, we painted the existing surround—more than once—and it refreshed the space.
Rather than building a window seat, we chose a rattan daybed that fits the room perfectly and is adored by the dogs. We haven’t added trim yet, but paint and new window shades have brightened and softened the space.
Every season we shuffle rugs, furniture, artwork, and lamps, experimenting to find the most comfortable arrangement. Small tweaks keep the room feeling fresh without a full remodel.

I still dream up new ideas for the room—it’s what I do—but I’ve grown content with how it is now. It feels comfortable, inviting, and cozy. That sense of ease matters more than ticking every box on my original wish list.
There’s value in embracing simplicity: appreciating what you already have rather than constantly pursuing something new or different.
When I do decide on a larger change, I want it to be intentional. I prefer updates that reflect our needs and bring joy rather than following fleeting trends. Thoughtful choices that are meaningful and practical feel right for our home.
One question I keep considering is whether to redesign the fireplace wall. Part of me would love a fresh look; part of me appreciates the simplicity of what we already have.
