Do you love taking walks in the fall? I do.
I know many people turn first to stores, Pinterest, or blogs for home decor inspiration, but for me nothing is more creatively energizing than stepping outside. Nature is full of ideas—rich colors, intriguing textures, and found objects like branches, pine cones, and leaves. All of these natural elements spark fresh decorating ideas.
Right now, when I step outside I can smell the fragrance of evergreen trees—almost like Christmas trees. Living in the Pacific Northwest brings an abundance of beautiful trees and that wonderful, forest scent is one of my favorite things about this season.

On my walks I frequently find natural treasures: sticks, branches, pine cones, seed pods, and leaves. These simple finds can become striking elements in seasonal vignettes and everyday decor.

Two years ago I found a branch to hang ornaments from in my window.

This fall I gathered branches with colorful leaves to place in a hurricane vase on my mantel.

But this week, on what felt like the most glorious fall day so far, I stumbled upon a treasure trove of branches beneath some trees. I found birch branches, moss-covered sticks, and small logs—perfect for crafting and decorating.
I was genuinely excited. It felt a little indulgent to grin and call them “my pretties,” but I couldn’t help myself. I collected so many pieces that my husband had to drive the car down the street to help haul them home. I even brought back one branch taller than my front door. It was a rewarding walk and an excellent reminder of how much natural materials add to holiday schemes.
Now I’m planning to use these branches throughout my holiday decor—on the mantel, in tall vases, and on the porch. Branches add height, texture, and a rustic, organic feel that complements lights, greens, and ornaments. They’re versatile, inexpensive, and uniquely personal when gathered yourself.

If you enjoy foraging for decor, here are a few practical tips for using branches safely and attractively:
- Choose sturdy, dry pieces—avoid branches that are rotten or infested with insects.
- Clean branches by brushing off loose dirt and leaves. For indoor use, you can lightly wipe them with a damp cloth and let them dry thoroughly.
- Secure branches in heavy vases, weighted containers, or by anchoring them with stones or floral foam to prevent tipping.
- Combine branches with greenery, string lights, or ornaments to create a layered, seasonal display.
- Think beyond vases—use branches to create entryway accents, mantel installations, or porch arrangements for a natural, elevated look.
Finding and using natural materials in your home encourages creativity and helps you make decor that feels organic and personal. Whether you gather a single pretty twig or a whole armful of birch logs, those little pieces of nature add character and warmth to your space.
