One of the things we appreciated when house hunting in Seattle was the flexibility the home offered. Although the main floor is fairly modest at about 1500 square feet, the finished basement, attached garage and a generous backyard create a lot of possibilities for expanded living and working spaces.
From the start we’ve imagined multiple uses for the lower level beyond everyday family life — as expanded workspace for our business, a rental suite, or even a place for my parents to live with us if that ever made sense. All those options remain possibilities.
Currently our home office and most of the business operations, along with the laundry room, are located downstairs. It’s also where items we aren’t sure what to do with tend to collect — anyone else have a basement like that? While we feel settled in many ways, there’s still plenty to plan and improve this year.
One idea we’ve considered is converting and organizing our garage — which we don’t use for a car — into a dedicated studio for the business. A garage studio could provide a private, flexible workspace while leaving the main house free for family life.

I can envision many possibilities in that space. I’ve already started an inspiration file full of ideas for layout, lighting, storage and creative touches, and I’ll share some of those visuals here.
This week I’m preparing a post that will update everyone on our progress so far — with before-and-after photos and our plans and goals for the coming year.
