Freestanding Kitchen Islands & Rolling Carts for Extra Prep Space

Greetings, friends! I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Last week I enjoyed sharing my floor plan ideas and imagining possibilities for our kitchen layout. I’ll return soon with more thoughts on other parts of the floor plan, including where a second bathroom might fit on the main floor. For now, I want to focus on kitchen islands.

Years ago I had a custom island built on site by a cabinetmaker for our English Tudor kitchen. It was one of my favorite pieces: dovetailed drawers for excellent storage, built-in shelving for cookbooks, and a rich Brazilian cherry countertop that made the island feel like fine furniture within the room.

In our last home we transformed an unfinished freestanding island into a useful kitchen centerpiece. It wasn’t as lavish as the built-in island, but it was charming, practical, and added personality to the space.

For now I’m resisting buying or designing a new island until our remodeling plans are certain and we know the exact size and configuration the island would need to fit. In the meantime, I’ve been collecting ideas and researching freestanding islands and kitchen carts that work in a variety of kitchens and styles.

A movable or rolling island can be a smart option for many kitchens. These pieces add flexible counter space, extra storage, and design variety. If your kitchen is small, a compact or folding island may still work — some models collapse or tuck neatly against a wall when not in use. Several options I found even offer free shipping and quick delivery, so a freestanding island can be an easy, fast update if you want to refresh your kitchen without a full remodel.

Do you have a kitchen island or dream about adding one?

Whether you prefer a built-in, custom-designed island or a movable cart, there are plenty of stylish and functional options to consider. A well-chosen freestanding island can provide extra prep space, seating, and storage while bringing warmth and character to your kitchen. When planning, measure carefully to ensure adequate traffic space around the island and think about how you’ll use it daily — as a workspace, a serving station, or an informal dining spot.

If you’re exploring options, look for durable countertops, soft-close drawers, and sturdy casters for mobility. Consider finishes that complement your existing cabinets and flooring, and remember that a contrasting island color can create a beautiful focal point. Small islands and carts are especially useful in rental homes or for those who want flexibility during a future remodel.

Do you have an island story or a favorite style? I’d love to hear what works in your kitchen and which features you wouldn’t want to live without.
