Summer Quilt and Pattern Mixing Tips for Stylish Quilts

I gave our tiny guest room a quick summer refresh last week. It feels wonderful to have guests back in the house — most of them family — and the room now feels fresh, cozy, and inviting. I’ve collected quite a few quilts over the years, and layering different patterns on the bed instantly adds charm and a cottage-like warmth to a small space.

You don’t need to buy everything new to achieve this look; mix pieces you already own with a few new finds. In this room I combined teal blue and white striped sheets, a white waffle-weave blanket, a reversible floral-and-dotted quilt, stitched and quilted patterned shams, navy-and-white striped pom-pom curtains, and a fringed accent pillow. None of the pieces match exactly, and that mismatch is part of the appeal — it feels collected, personal, and relaxed.

Mixing and matching is also a budget-friendly way to decorate: you can build an appealing layered look by adding one or two new items to what you already have.

Here are a few simple tips to get started decorating with pattern:

If you’re hesitant about introducing pattern, start small. One patterned quilt (or a reversible quilt that pairs two coordinating patterns) is an easy first step. Alternatively, begin with patterned sheets and build the rest of the bedding around them.

Stripes are timeless and versatile — they pair beautifully with florals, geometrics, or other stripe patterns.

A helpful rule is to choose one color plus white. Using several shades of the same color with white creates a cohesive, polished look even when patterns vary.

When you’re ready to mix several patterns, apply the “one color plus white” approach to keep the combinations harmonious. You can also use multiple shades of the same color for a layered, sophisticated effect.

If you’d like to pair two items with the same pattern—two florals or two stripes—vary the scale: combine one large-scale pattern with a smaller-scale pattern for balance.

If you want a bold pattern or color to stand out, let it be the star of the room. Use smaller patterns and softer tones in supporting roles so the space doesn’t feel crowded.

Don’t forget texture: pom-poms, tassels, fringe, waffle weaves, and quilting add visual interest and make a room feel thoughtfully layered and comfortable.

Room Sources:

Stitch quilt shams, reversible floral quilt and matching shams, navy striped curtains with pom-pom trim, white thermal waffle blanket, blue-and-white striped sheets, and a red reversible floral comforter were used in the room styling. I also incorporated a fringed accent pillow and an upholstered camelback-style bed for a cozy, finished look.

For a final touch, fresh hydrangeas brightened the space; faux stems can be a lovely alternative when fresh flowers aren’t available.
