Today I’m sharing our small deck makeover for summer. It turned out so cute — we absolutely love it!

You might recall that I mentioned this deck as one of my upcoming projects in the spring.

A week or so ago my husband was inspired to paint the front deck railings, so I ordered a few pieces of furniture. The items arrived faster than expected and, with perfect weather, the makeover came together quickly.

Here are the main pieces I used to create this small deck makeover plus a few design tips and unexpected ideas!

1. Rug
2. Table and Chairs
3. Plant Stands

Outdoor wicker plant stands (unexpected features and ways to use them)

One of my favorite pieces is the outdoor wicker-style plant stand. It looks like natural wicker but is durable enough for outdoor use. It comes in multiple colors and is incredibly versatile — the design is clever and practical.

Here are a few useful details and creative ways to use these plant stands:

1. The planter basket can be removed from the stand and used on its own.

2. The basket works well on a table, windowsill, or the ground and can hold plants or other items.

3. You can place the basket on the lower tier and use the top section as a small surface — a smart two-in-one solution.

4. The top piece can double as a tray when removed, which is handy for serving or organizing small items.

5. Use two or more stands together to create the feel of an outdoor room or a small privacy screen. Add plants for color, texture and varying heights.

These plant stands are also lovely indoors.

6. Use one as an indoor planter for real or faux plants, or as a storage piece.

7. They work well as small furniture or storage near a bed, next to a chair, under a window, in a bathroom, an entryway, a baby’s room, mudroom or hallway.

I bought two and already know I could use more throughout the house and yard.

A boldly patterned rug

For a small deck I wanted a rug that would cover the area under the table and chairs and make the spot feel intentional. A bold, graphic pattern was the perfect choice to ground the space and add personality. In a compact area, don’t be afraid to choose a lively pattern — it can make the space feel fresh and inviting without competing with the furniture.

A charming cafe table + two chairs

Even in a small area I wanted a table large enough for a centerpiece, two place settings and maybe a couple of books. This simple white cafe table and two chairs fit perfectly. The set has a classic silhouette that still feels fresh. It’s airy and light, creating a pleasant contrast with the rug while adding warm brown accents that tie to interior wood floors. The pieces are easy to move but substantial enough to stay put when it’s breezy.

Always create a destination

I love this little deck — it’s the spot that made me certain this house was meant for us. Years ago I imagined a bedroom with French doors leading to a private outdoor sitting area; that idea came true in this home and still feels like a small miracle.

This deck is more than something to look at; it’s a destination. It’s where we watch birds in summer and fall, sip morning coffee, read, enjoy sunrises and sunsets, tend plants and have dinner for two.

When I design a space I think about creating a place I want to go. Recreating that feeling at home turns any small outdoor area into an enjoyable retreat you can use every day.

This deck is a place for quiet mornings and relaxed evenings; keeping the doors open all day makes it a seamless extension of the home.
