Holiday Decluttering and Cozy Puttering Ideas for Seasonal Joy

Simply Inspired Holidays: Puttering and DeclutteringNew England Home

puttering-and-decluttering

I love this time of year for putting things in order and doing a little decluttering. Clearing out items you no longer need creates space for seasonal decorations, gifts, and the simple pleasures that make the holidays feel special. A small, focused effort can make a big difference: a tidy surface, a reorganized shelf, or a donation box tucked by the door all help the house feel lighter and more welcoming.

For today, I’ve set a simple goal: remove or rearrange ten items in my home. That could mean donating a sweater I never wear, relocating a stack of magazines, storing unused cushions, or grouping similar items together so everything looks intentional. The idea is not perfection but progress—small, manageable changes that add up and reduce daily friction.

When you declutter with purpose, it’s easier to maintain a calm, festive environment. Here are a few gentle strategies I follow:

  • Start small: pick one surface, drawer, or shelf and make it purposeful.
  • Sort into three piles: keep, donate, and store. Be realistic about what you actually use.
  • Group like with like: arranging items by function or color instantly looks cleaner.
  • Limit replacements: if you remove something, resist the urge to fill the space immediately.
  • Use boxes or baskets to corral small items—neat containers make an area feel organized.

Decluttering also makes decorating for the season more fun. With fewer items competing for attention, your holiday accents—candles, wreaths, or a cozy throw—stand out more. It’s easier to create inviting vignettes when the background is simple and uncluttered.

If you’re motivated to join in, try setting a modest goal for the day: remove five to ten things, or clear one key area like an entryway table or TV console. Take a timer and give yourself 20–30 minutes; you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in a short burst. And when you finish, take a moment to enjoy the result: a small, refreshed corner that feels calmer and more welcoming.
