6 Proven Ways to Keep Your Sink Sparkling Clean

Today I’m sharing more of my favorite kitchen cleaning tips, with six simple secrets to keep your sink shiny!

How to clean a sink

A clean sink not only makes your kitchen look fresh and inviting, it can also lift your mood and make daily tasks easier.

Below are practical tips, a simple DIY soft cleaning paste recipe, and recommended methods to keep your sink bright and well maintained.

1. Keep your sink free of dishes.

Make a habit of not letting dishes pile up in the sink. Use the sink only as a temporary spot while cooking or clearing the table, and wash or load items into the dishwasher as soon as you have a moment. Avoid leaving dishes overnight. This small habit prevents grime, odors, and stains from forming and keeps the sink looking cleaner day to day.

2. Don’t keep clean dishes in your dishwasher.

When clean dishes remain in the dishwasher, dirty ones tend to accumulate on the counter and in the sink. Empty the dishwasher first thing in the morning and again before dinner so you always have space to place the day’s dishes directly into it. This practice reduces clutter and minimizes the chance of scuffs, stains, and lingering mess at the sink.

3. Do a quick clean and polish regularly.

Wipe the sink after messy cooking or craft projects using a toxin-free cleaner. For a fast, gentle clean, sprinkle baking soda around the sink, spray with a mild, concentrated cleaner diluted in water, then scrub with a sink-safe brush or sponge and rinse. This routine removes surface residue and keeps metal fixtures gleaming without harsh chemicals.

4. For nightly cleaning, make this DIY soft cleaning paste recipe

Prepare a soft cleaning paste to use at the end of each day. It’s simple to make and helps keep the sink fresh and cared for.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda
3 capfuls mild concentrated household cleaner
10 drops lemon essential oil (optional, to help cut sticky residue)

Mix the ingredients to form a paste. Apply with a sponge or soft brush, scrub gently, then rinse thoroughly. This paste is effective for everyday maintenance and avoids harsh abrasives that can dull finishes.

Clean and shiny results without strong chemicals.

5. To deep clean and remove scuff marks, use a dedicated scrub.

For tougher scuffs or ingrained stains, use a gentle, purpose-made kitchen and bath scrub along with a sturdy but non-scratch sponge. These scrubs are formulated to lift marks from porcelain and composite sinks without damaging the surface when used as directed. Apply the scrub, work it in with the sponge, then rinse and dry to restore brightness.

Keep a scrub and a good non-scratch sponge on hand for occasional deep cleaning and stubborn spots. Regular use prevents buildup and keeps your sink looking newer longer.

6. Master the habit of daily sink cleaning.

Many people delay dish tasks, but reframing sink care as a quick daily habit makes a big difference. I call this a “domino habit”: consistently tending to one simple task—wiping and clearing the sink each day—leads to a cleaner kitchen, less clutter, and reduced stress. The ritual takes only a few minutes and creates momentum for other tidying routines.

Small, regular actions—emptying the dishwasher, rinsing and wiping the sink, and using the soft paste when needed—add up. Over time they maintain a fresh, functional kitchen and save effort on deep cleans.
