I enjoy studying rooms to understand what makes a design feel warm and inviting. Looking at well-composed interiors reveals practical choices and small details that encourage comfort and style.
I’m a fan of Sarah Richardson’s work—her farmhouse and summer house projects are full of character, thoughtful layers, and approachable elegance.
I’ve watched many episodes and keep returning to her designs for inspiration. Below are several images of Sarah Richardson’s rooms with observations on what makes each space work.
1. Create a serene corner for daydreaming. (see photo above)
Design a nook that gently draws you in and invites lingering. A relaxed chair, soft lighting, and tactile textiles make a small corner feel like a private retreat where you can read, reflect, or simply rest.

2. Create smaller conversation areas within a room.
Breaking a large room into intimate seating groups encourages connection. Two chairs paired with a small table or footstool create a welcoming spot for conversation, coffee, or shared moments without overwhelming the overall layout.

3. Make a room useful and comfortable with footstools and end tables.
Practical pieces like footstools and end tables scattered around a space increase comfort and convenience. When people can put their feet up and set a drink or book down, a room instantly feels more livable and welcoming.
4. Introduce drama.
Don’t shy away from bold choices. A dramatic finish, unexpected color, or a striking focal point brings personality and energy. Thoughtful contrast makes people stop, look, and remember the space.

5. Layer color and pattern.
Sarah’s fearless mixing of patterns and colors creates rooms that feel lively yet cozy. Combine large florals, bold geometrics, and smaller-scale patterns to build visual interest. Use a unifying piece—like a quilt or throw—that pulls colors together to maintain cohesion while still celebrating variety.
