Today I’m inviting someone else to share her story of finding contentment at home this autumn. That’s been the goal of this series: to show simple ways to welcome contentment in this season, right where we are. It’s easy to miss out on the small joys of home when we overthink, worry about what we don’t have, or make excuses for not doing the things we love.
I love my friend Holly for so many reasons — including her ability to find beauty and contentment right where she lives. She’s authentic and talented; if you don’t already know Holly, I encourage you to visit her blog. Welcome, Holly!
Don’t you love it when something you’ve admired for years becomes trendy just after you’ve wanted to try it? Whether it’s a fabric, a haircut, or an accessory, it can feel a little odd when everyone suddenly has what you’ve liked all along. It’s a silly feeling, maybe prideful, but human all the same.
{Image from Pottery Barn — I love that their stairs look as well-loved as mine!}
I first noticed the idea of numbering stairs in a Pottery Barn decorating book some time ago, so it wasn’t a wholly original thought. As the trend grew, I hesitated to try it because I didn’t want to feel like I was just following everyone else. But recently I convinced my husband, who happened to be in a generous mood, and we decided to add numbers to our stairs.
Instead of worrying about being “too trendy,” I embraced the idea simply because I liked it and it fits our home and lifestyle.
Designers like Sarah Richardson have used different fonts and colors to make numbered stairs feel unique and personal. That encouraged me to make the idea my own with a style that complements our home.
I used removable vinyl numbers that are easy to find online. It was a quick afternoon project — one I completed while our little one napped.
So here it is… my take on the numbered stair trend.
I’m really happy with how it looks.
The boys seem to enjoy it too — maybe the baby will pick up his numbers faster than his older brother did.
I learned a simple lesson:
Decorate your home the way you want. Enjoy it.
Just enjoy!
Thanks to Holly for sharing her honest, down-to-earth perspective. PS — on Saturday we’ll host a link-up, so if you’ve shared posts about autumn or Thanksgiving, bring them to the conversation!
