One of my favorite things about autumn is making rooms feel warmer, and curtains are a simple, effective way to do that. In a home with beautiful windows and trim, curtains may be unnecessary, but for most of us they serve several purposes: they add privacy, conceal imperfect windows or woodwork, and—perhaps most importantly—make a room feel cozy.
I reused curtains from my previous house to be thrifty, though I worried they might make the dining room feel closed in. Once fall arrived, I was ready for that cozy feeling, and the panels didn’t overwhelm the space as I feared. Instead, the added fabric softened the room and made it feel warmer.
Installing them was easy. I used a simple tension rod that fit between the window molding and the wall and hung a stationary panel on each side. They weren’t intended to open and close for privacy or warmth, so stationary panels were perfect. When winter ends they’re simple to remove.
The stained-glass pieces shown are antique church windows that have personal meaning for my family: we started a church a year ago, so these pieces feel authentic and meaningful. They also work well over the regular windows and help obscure an imperfect view. I attached them with Command Hooks—those velcro-like hooks are great for temporary displays and I use them everywhere. I enjoy solving aesthetic problems with simple, creative solutions.
Autumn is a season for feeling snug at home, so I’m enjoying finally having curtains in two rooms—baby steps toward a cozier house.
Do you change or add curtains in the fall?
