3 Summer Spaces to Inspire Your Outdoor Living

Wouldn’t you love to have lunch on that screened porch?

It looks cool, comfortable, and perfectly inviting.

Outdoor rooms like this encourage you to step outside on a warm summer day or a cool evening to enjoy the atmosphere and relax.

I’m drawn to the weathered green chairs against the dark wood table and flooring, paired with the sunny yellow throw rug.

The combination creates a relaxed, charming mood that feels effortless and welcoming.

This quirky front door is fantastic.

The mustard yellow paint and oversized zinc numbers announce that guests have arrived at the right place — a home that says “come in and stay awhile.”

Just to the left of that cheerful door is a lively front porch.

I love how the mix of fabrics and eclectic furnishings adds drama and personality to the space.

Back at my own house, I’m gradually working on my porch and creating some simple garden areas around the yard. I’ll be sharing more of those projects in the coming days and weeks.

We’ve had a few rainy spells, but I’m hoping for a stretch of good weather so I can finish the outdoor tasks I’ve started. Every chance I get, I’m out there tinkering, and the results of just a little effort have made our yard much more enjoyable.

I didn’t do much gardening at my previous home because we focused on indoor projects, so it’s been a while since I tended a yard regularly. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy puttering with plants and creating outdoor spaces — it’s surprisingly therapeutic. Even if my thumbs aren’t always green, I love the process of designing and nurturing outdoor rooms.

Do you enjoy creating summer spaces as much as I do? It’s been hot in many parts of the country, so some of you may be staying inside with the air conditioning. Here in Washington, we’re still gearing up for the heart of summer—I hope the warm weather arrives soon.
