3 Reasons Shallow Underbed Storage Bags Beat a Linen Closet

Slim underbed storage for small spaces to hold seasonal items, linens andmore!
Shallow underbed storage bags

These shallow underbed storage bags are ideal for keeping linens, seasonal items, and other bedding organized and out of sight. Not everyone has a dedicated linen closet, and in our home we needed a practical solution for guest linens and extra sheets. Our regular sheets fit in a dresser, but guest sets required a different approach. I chose shallow underbed storage so we could tuck them into narrow spaces, like under our rattan daybed.

Do you forget what items you store under the bed? Here’s a solution!

I used to avoid underbed storage because I often forgot what I put there. To fix that, I developed a few simple habits that make it easy to remember where things are: use items you’ll actually reach for, group related items together, and store them in a spot that makes sense to you. If you keep similar items together and place them near where they’ll be used, you’re less likely to lose track of them.

For example, putting camping gear and holiday platters together under a guest bed makes it hard to remember either months later. If underbed storage is your only option, a small system—like a seasonal storage chart or noting locations in a planner—helps you quickly recall where items are stored.

Three reasons I like these shallow underbed storage bags

Beyond providing a tidy home for guest linens, these shallow underbed storage bags work well for several practical reasons.

  1. The bags have fabric fronts, so when they’re visible under a bed they look neater than plastic bins. Even without a bedskirt, the fabric face keeps the area looking tidy.
  2. They’re shallow enough to slide under low-profile beds. Our rattan daybed sits close to the floor and has limited clearance, but these bags fit into the tight space without bulging or getting stuck.
  3. These bags have solid side panels that help them maintain shape, making it easy to slide them in and out. Unlike floppy zippered bags, these hold their form under a bed and include handles for convenient access.

What fits in the bags under the bed?

We fit two shallow bags under our daybed: one holds winter twin bedding and the other stores lighter cotton sheets and summer blankets. We have a rattan twin bed and two REI sleeping cots, plus a sofa that doubles as a bed when needed, so multiple sets of twin sheets are useful. Because the space under the daybed is limited, it’s best for sheets and thin blankets rather than thick comforters or bulky items.

Under our double guest bed we store two more bags for that bed’s linens and blankets. There’s a little extra room that we could use for additional bags, but right now slim guitars occupy some of that space—a practical compromise when closet space is tight and temperature-controlled storage is needed.

Read on to see where we keep bulkier bedding like mattress pads.

Where I store bulkier bedding like mattress pads

Fluffier mattress pads and thick toppers don’t fit well under beds, so we store those in lidded rattan trunks. These trunks keep bulkier items protected and easily accessible. If trunks aren’t an option, other solutions include dressers with deep drawers, lidded benches at the foot of the bed, or storage ottomans—each offers enclosed space for larger bedding while doubling as furniture.

Double duty for maximizing small spaces

In a smaller home, furniture that performs multiple roles is essential. Our daybed functions as an office seating area, a TV-watching couch with plenty of pillows for back support, and a guest bed when needed. Adding underbed storage makes it triple-duty by creating a discreet place for linens. Embracing multi-purpose furniture and organized storage solutions makes living in a small space much more manageable and enjoyable.

A smaller home challenges you to be creative, and organizing with thoughtful, space-saving solutions can turn that challenge into a fun design opportunity. I hope these ideas inspire you to make the most of your space.
