When we bought our 1950s brick ranch in Seattle about five and a half years ago, it wasn’t my dream home. The house was solid for its age, but the style didn’t match what I imagined. Because it needed updates, though, it was the perfect canvas for us to make it our own and slowly shape it into the coastal cottage we envisioned.
Looking beyond the things I didn’t love at first glance, I could picture the potential. With a mix of small, affordable changes and a few larger projects, the house gradually transformed. A fresh coat of paint, new hardware, and updated lighting made a huge difference, while bigger efforts like a new kitchen and a rebuilt patio required more time and planning. It’s amazing what a little paint and thoughtful choices can do.
Over the years we’ve steadily updated rooms and outdoor spaces. There are still many projects on our list, but instead of feeling frustrated about what’s left to do, I enjoy reflecting on the progress we’ve made. The before-and-after photos still surprise me. I’ll share separate posts with inspiration for future work, but for now, here’s a look back at the journey so far.
Our home is always evolving, so you may notice plants growing, landscaping shifting, or furniture and decor changing between photos. These images were taken over several years and often serve as progress shots rather than final after photos. Some projects are still ongoing and the final afters may come later.
This post highlights many of the changes we’ve made. Click the links beneath each photo for more details about a specific project.

Painted the master bedroom a deep plum color and later completed a full master bedroom makeover.

We installed plantation shutters throughout the house for a cohesive, finished look and improved privacy.

We added wood details to a dining room wall and installed shiplap for texture and charm.

We removed carpet and painted my son’s room a deep night-sky gray to create a cozy, modern feel.

In the lower level we added a dividing wall to create a home office and guest space, removed carpet, painted the staircase, and installed new laminate flooring for durability and a clean look.

We set up an apartment-style space in the lower level for guests and flexibility.

The basement bathroom received a simple but effective makeover: a painted vanity, wall stencil, and new lights and fixtures to give it fresh style on a budget.
We feel great about our progress, but there’s so much more on our list we hope to get to in time! I hope this post inspires you to see the possibility and potential in your home.
