18 Rugs We Own and Love — Buying Tips and Where to Shop

Rug shopping can feel overwhelming. With so many stores, colors, materials and styles, choosing the right rug is a big decision—especially because returns can be a hassle. I’m someone who gets paralyzed by too many choices, so recommendations and seeing rugs in real homes make shopping so much easier.

Because I’m often asked about the rugs we use, I wanted to gather many of them in one place. Below I share new rugs we’ve owned recently (or that are in my daughters’ homes), along with the styles and sources for those still available. I’ve omitted vintage pieces for now—those deserve their own post—but included a variety of new, currently available rugs plus a few extra options I like at the end.

Places I’ve bought new rugs:

  • Pottery Barn
  • Overstock
  • Walmart
  • Dash & Albert / Annie Selke
  • Ruggable (machine washable)
  • Amazon
  • Wayfair
  • World Market
  • Rugs USA
  • Target

Other shops worth checking: Ballard Designs, Birch Lane, Lulu & Georgia, Urban Outfitters, Joss & Main, H&M Home, and Rifle Paper Co. I’ll add more sources as I think of them.

Tips for choosing rugs

Rugs do a lot: they add texture, warmth, color and help define seating areas. Decide whether you want a neutral, natural-fiber rug that provides texture without overwhelming the room, or a colorful or patterned rug that becomes the focal point.

Size matters. Runners are ideal for hallways and by kitchen sinks—affordable, easy to move, and great for adding comfort. Smaller rugs work well layered over larger textured rugs or near entryways and powder rooms for a quick style update.

For living rooms, larger rugs that accommodate the front legs of main furniture pieces help create a cohesive conversation area. That said, consider your room layout, traffic flow, doors and furniture—rules can be adapted to your space. If you have pets, consider indoor/outdoor rugs or washable rugs for easier maintenance.

Comfort rug with non-slip padding—great at kitchen sinks; cushioned, easy to wipe clean, and machine washable.

The comfort-style rug is especially nice at the sink because it’s cushioned and easy to clean. We have it in multiple sizes and patterns; smaller sizes work well by doors or layered over other floor coverings.
