Welcome to our early fall entry. As the air cools and the leaves begin to change, I love creating a warm, welcoming transition into our home. An entryway sets the tone for the comfort and coziness you want guests to feel inside, so even a small entry can be an important and intentional space.

With fall officially arriving this week, we celebrated with a simple entry refresh using mostly items we already had. Small updates can make a big difference, and pulling together pieces from nearby rooms helps the whole area feel cohesive and intentional.
There are lots of photos in this post, because seeing different angles and how the entry connects to nearby spaces is helpful—especially in a smaller home where every inch counts.
You can see a short video of our entry below.

Small space or no dedicated entry? No problem!
Not everyone has a formal entryway. The transition into your home might be a small landing, a porch, a front step, or even a corner of the living room. Whatever the size, that space can be made cozier, more inviting, and reflective of the season.

Don’t compare or despair
Our entry is on the smaller side, and that’s perfectly fine—it works for our home. If you ever feel discouraged by social media comparisons, remember perspective matters. A smaller entry can still feel warm and welcoming, even without much floor space for furniture or accessories.
I use what I have and arrange it to create the feeling I want. Below are tips and ideas we used to make our entry cozy and functional.

13 tips we used to create a welcoming fall entry
- Look around. Use surrounding spaces to extend the entry’s function and style. A cohesive look between nearby rooms helps a small entry feel intentional and connected.
- Don’t feel limited by size. If the entry is too small for a bench or pillows, tuck those elements around the corner in the living room or on a porch. The goal is a welcoming experience at the front door, even if some accents sit just out of sight.
- Swap pillows for a seasonal mood. Swapping in a few fall pillows is an easy way to shift the feel of adjoining spaces and create a cozy transition from the door inward.

- Incorporate meaningful or seasonal art. We added seascape art on the stairwell that helped establish a color palette for the space. Meaningful pieces—found, collected, or secondhand—often inform a room’s palette and mood.
- Let lighting set the tone. A lantern or warm light fixture can dramatically change the entry’s atmosphere. We switched our fixture recently and it now sets a cozy, welcoming tone for the whole area.

- Set up a small entry table or shelf. A demilune or narrow shelf near the door gives you a surface for a lamp, a bowl for keys, and seasonal accents like pinecones or small bouquets.

- Use a fall bouquet for color. Fresh, locally grown flowers bring seasonal color and life to the entry. Even short-lived blooms make a big impact, and sourcing local flowers supports small growers.
- Gather what you have. Decorating with existing pieces keeps things personal and budget-friendly. That said, a few new purchases can elevate a space when needed.

- Add vintage elements for character. A door basket or antique find can add charm and texture. Imperfect pieces often tell a story and make a space feel lived-in.
- Use warm metal accents. Copper, brushed brass, or aged metals add glow and warmth to a fall palette—an umbrella stand or small accent can be both functional and decorative.

- A rug pulls everything together. A seasonal rug adds warmth underfoot and establishes a fall color palette. It ties in hues from artwork, the door, and surrounding decor—use a non-slip pad for safety.
- Invest in classic pieces. Choose items you love and will keep for years. Timeless choices—like a striped rug or a simple lantern—won’t feel dated as trends change.
- Don’t wait for future projects. If you have plans for renovations, don’t let that stop you from making the home inviting now. Small updates create immediate comfort while you plan larger changes.
