After revisiting the front door and entry inspiration from our opening 31 Days post, I’m excited about fall entryways all over again. I’ve always cared about the way a home welcomes you—the entry sets the mood. With a few simple updates you can turn a lackluster entry into a warm, inviting space. Here are practical, approachable tips to create a cozy fall welcome.

Tip 1: Create a focal point. Choose a striking table, cabinet, bench or a bold mirror to catch the eye and bounce light through the space. If you don’t have room for furniture, a large mirror or a curated gallery of framed photos can anchor the area. When your entry flows into another room, make the adjacent focal point feel equally welcoming.
Tip 2: Add warm lighting. A lamp or candles instantly add a soft glow in the evening. If you lack surfaces, wall sconces are a great alternative. Choose lighting with personality—a distinctive shape or finish makes the space feel thoughtfully designed.

Tip 3: Rethink coat storage. A closet is practical, but creative hooks or a distinctive rack add character. Repurpose shutters, an old door, or a wooden ladder with hooks to make storage both useful and decorative.
Tip 4: Display usable seasonal items. Wool blankets, boots, scarves and mittens provide texture and function. Keep them in baskets or hang them on hooks so they’re part of the decor and ready to use.

Tip 5: Layer under surfaces. Use books, baskets, trunks, crates or a small footstool beneath open tables and benches to add warmth and depth.
Tip 6: Build height on tabletops. Stack books or place items on pedestals to introduce different levels, then try leaning art or mirrors for an easy, informal look.
Tip 7: Corral small items. A tray or basket on the entry table organizes keys, mail and accessories and gives the surface more texture and presence.
Tip 8: Favor larger pieces. One larger artwork or object often makes a stronger statement than multiple small items. Choose bold pieces that set the tone without cluttering the space.

Tip 9: Include a conversation piece. An interesting object or art piece welcomes guests and sparks dialogue. Look around your home for something memorable you can display in the entry.
Tip 10: Change accessories seasonally. Rotate items on your entry table or focal wall to celebrate holidays or seasonal moods. Small swaps keep the space feeling fresh.
Tip 11: Add unexpected color. If the entry feels dull, introduce a pop of color—paint the door, add a vibrant lamp, a bright throw, or even wallpaper one wall for impact. Small bold choices can change the entire feeling of the space.
Tip 12: Bring texture for warmth. If the entry feels cold, try grasscloth or wood-paneled walls, or place a textured rug to soften and warm the floor.

Autumn Action step:
Take a look at your entry right now. Even if you don’t have a traditional entryway, you have a door and a small area to enhance. Think of a few simple touches you can add—lighting, a focal object, a basket for seasonal items, or a rug—to create a cozier welcome. Small changes go a long way.
Take a photo of your entry and share it where you like to document your projects.
