Choosing a sofa for your home can feel overwhelming. A sofa is a major investment that shapes the look and function of a room, so it’s worth taking time to research and consider your options before committing.
When I was shopping for my white slipcovered sofa last year, I changed my mind countless times. There are so many styles, fabrics, and construction details to weigh, and it can feel like a lot of pressure. In the end, taking the time to compare options paid off—I’m very happy with the result.
Here are 11 designer tips and practical considerations to help you choose the perfect sofa.

Select the right size – Make sure the sofa’s dimensions suit your room. A sofa that’s too large will crowd the space; too small and it will look out of proportion.
Use a floor template—painter’s tape on the floor or cardboard boxes—to visualize how different sizes and shapes will fit. This helps you decide what offers the best balance of seating and traffic flow without overwhelming the room.
Consider seat depth – Think about how you will use the sofa. Deep seats are great for curling up, layering pillows, or napping. Shallower seats work well in formal settings or when people will sit upright.
If you already have a chair or sofa you find comfortable, measure the seat depth (from the back of the cushion to the front) to match a similar feel in your new piece.
Choose solids for versatility –Patterned upholstery can be beautiful, but neutral solid sofas provide more flexibility as your style evolves. Save bold patterns for pillows or accessories so you can update the look more easily. If you love a pattern and can replace the sofa later, go for what makes you happiest.

Know your comfort preferences – Down-filled loose back cushions soften over time and require regular fluffing to maintain shape. They read as casual and are comfortable, but not as tidy. If you prefer a streamlined look with less maintenance, choose a sofa with a tight back or integrated back cushions. If you nap on the sofa, consider removable back cushions or a deeper seat for comfort.
Factor in maintenance and fabric – Decide whether you want removable slipcovers that are machine-washable or a fabric that hides wear. Some fabrics are delicate and hard to clean, while performance or indoor/outdoor fabrics now offer durable, easy-care options in attractive textures.
Visit a showroom – Even if you plan to buy online, try sofas in person. Sit, curl up, and move around on different models to see what feels right. Rearranging cushions and testing proportions in a showroom helps clarify what you really want.

Check the back height – Low-back sofas feel relaxed and modern, while higher backs add presence and support. In rooms with high ceilings or large proportions, a taller back can feel appropriate. Be mindful that a high-backed sofa placed away from a wall can visually divide a room.
Consider shape and style –Tufted backs and rolled arms read as formal. Straight lines feel contemporary. Rounded silhouettes can suggest traditional or cottage styles. For small rooms, choose a streamlined sofa with narrow arms and a straight back to maximize space; avoid overly bulky pieces that dominate the floorplan.

Legs or skirt – Whether a sofa shows legs or has a skirt is largely a style decision. Skirted sofas soften a room and conceal legs, while exposed legs can feel lighter and more modern. Look through inspiration images to see which approach suits your overall decor.
Plan the whole layout – Think beyond the sofa itself. Allow space for side tables, a coffee table, and circulation paths. A sofa that fits the room’s footprint but blocks other furniture will make the space less functional.
Order fabric samples – Request upholstery swatches to view in your home under different lighting. A sample will help you coordinate paint, rugs, and pillows and ensure the color and texture read correctly in your space.
