10 Essential Tasks to Finish Before Holiday Guests Arrive

White Paneled Hallway with Wood Framed Chalkboard - The Inspired Room Christmas House Tour
It is almost time for holiday parties!

I’ve always loved hosting gatherings. In fact, it’s one of my best tricks for keeping the house tidy — once an invitation goes out, I’m motivated to straighten things up. Whether the event is large or small, I follow a simple routine that helps me create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and frees me to enjoy my guests.

Top Ten Things to Do Before a Party:

  1. Sweep the front walk and porch. Clear debris and provide a clean doormat so guests can wipe their feet before entering.
  2. Turn on outdoor lights. Soft lighting makes the approach to your home inviting. A favorite idea is to place candles in mason jars—fill each jar about a quarter full with Epsom salts and add a votive. Line your walkway or porch with them for a cozy entrance.
  3. Tidy and stage the entryway. First impressions matter. Remove clutter and shoes, offer a clean mat inside, and prepare a spot for coats. Light a candle a couple of hours before guests arrive, blow it out to let the wax settle, then relight it about 20 minutes before the party so the scent is pleasant but the candle will last through the evening.
  4. Spruce up the powder room. Make sure it’s clean, stocked with fresh hand towels and toilet paper, and has an empty wastebasket. Place a scented candle in a safe spot and light it shortly before guests arrive.
  5. Prepare soft background music. Choose instrumental or lightly upbeat tracks that add ambiance without overpowering conversation. Keep the volume low enough for easy conversation.
  6. Provide ample seating and surfaces. Pull in extra chairs or small stools, and place side surfaces or trays where guests can set drinks. Bowls of nuts or small snacks help bridge the time before a main meal.
  7. Turn off the TV. A quiet television distracts from conversation and the overall atmosphere you’re creating.
  8. Light your home thoughtfully. Avoid dark corners. You can brighten the whole space by turning on several lights, or create a cozier vibe with lamps, candles, and dimmers—either way, aim for a welcoming glow.
  9. Have drinks ready as guests arrive. Offer something immediately accessible, like a pitcher of ice water. Warm, spiced beverages such as a hot cider add a seasonal scent and feel; serving a fragrant drink on arrival sets a festive tone.
  10. Take a breath, relax, and smile. A calm, friendly host helps guests feel comfortable right away. Greet people warmly and enjoy the evening.
