Winter Wellness Essentials: Smart Storage Ideas for Essential Oils

How I use essential oils

I love decorating my home, but more than aesthetics I focus on creating a healthy, happy environment. Whenever possible I combine style and wellness. That’s why I set up a winter wellness station—an attractive, convenient spot that inspires me and serves my family’s daily needs.

We use our essential oils every day. Over time they’ve become our go-to for many small health and household needs. They’re not just pleasant scents; they’re practical tools we rely on regularly.

A few years ago I stopped bringing toxic products into our home. I used to buy cleaners, air fresheners, scented hand soaps and many other items that promised to clean or refresh. I assumed I needed a product for every problem and didn’t consider the long-term effects of the chemicals we were using.

We were exposing ourselves to harsh ingredients—on dishes, hands, counters and in the air. Sometimes the fumes made me cough; other times perfumed products just masked odors without being safe. Over time I learned these habits were bringing unnecessary toxins into our home.

As I learned more about how those products affected health, I made a deliberate change: I removed toxic items and replaced them with plant-based products and pure essential oils. That shift reduced chemical exposure and brought more natural options into daily life.

Most of the oils and many household items I use come from Young Living, a brand I’ve used for several years and come to trust. Over time I’ve been impressed by their standards. Beyond oils, I use their skincare, supplements, makeup, haircare and cleaners. These products have become integral to maintaining a healthier home.

I used to love seasonal scented products—candles, hand soaps, lotions and air fresheners. They smelled wonderful, but I didn’t realize how they affected our health. I assumed occasional illnesses and low energy were normal, but once I connected the dots between what I brought into the home and how I felt, I started making different choices.

Why I stopped using heavily scented commercial products

At first I used Thieves essential oil mainly because I liked the warm, festive scent. I soon discovered that essential oils—pure plant essences—do much more than scent a room. They can support wellness in many practical ways.

The more I learned, the more I turned to oils for everyday needs. They’ve proven useful and reliable for a wide range of situations.

Oils have become the first line of defense in our household toolkit. We use them for a wide variety of needs and rely on them daily.

We’ve embraced a simpler, healthier approach: we read labels, avoid junk ingredients, and use natural wellness routines. My wellness station sits in our guest room closet, centrally located and tidy. I use the guest room as a retreat and writing space, so having the station there is both practical and soothing.

I enjoy spending time there crafting rollers, room sprays and natural remedies. It’s relaxing and more cost-effective than the products I used to buy. If you’re worried you need dozens of oils, don’t be—just a handful will cover many everyday needs.

Some bottles on my shelves came as free gifts with a monthly order; others are backups or gifts I like to give. There are endless DIY ideas and remedies—sharing those with friends is one of my favorite things to do.

When I started focusing on supporting my health and immune system consistently, I began feeling better than I had in years. That doesn’t mean oils are a cure-all or guarantee perfect health—environment, genetics and past exposures still matter. For instance, I live with Hashimoto’s and remain mindful of environmental influences. Still, feeling healthier and more energized has allowed me to keep up with family and work in ways I couldn’t before.

Those changes inspired me to help others create healthier homes, too.

When I first received oils, I didn’t know how to use most of them and let many sit unused. Later I learned how to incorporate them into daily life, which made all the difference. That’s why I enjoy helping friends get started—so those helpful bottles don’t stay hidden while toxic products remain in use.

If you’re unsure how to begin or think a wellness station is excessive, I’m happy to guide you. Many people benefit from just a few core oils and simple recipes to get started.
