Winter House Getaway: Cozy Vacation Rentals & Cabin Escapes

Winter Entry DecoratingNew England Home

BThis week’s bout of flu knocked me off my feet and derailed my plans. I had intended to wrap up the holidays, dive into some nesting projects, and catch up on blogging. Instead I’ve been confined to bed with fever, chills and a persistent cough. It’s been a rough start to January, especially since other members of my household have been under the weather too.

January can naturally feel like a slump: colder weather, shorter days and less sunlight make it easy to slow down. I usually fight the winter blues by making the house cozier—layering textures, adding blankets and creating inviting spots to sit by the fire.

I genuinely enjoy nesting and embracing that cozy, settled feeling.

As I recover, I’m already making plans for small design updates around the house this year. Without a major remodel on the horizon, I’m excited about smaller projects that increase comfort, personal character and everyday function. While I’m still moving slowly from this flu fog, I’ve been browsing for inspiration and thinking about practical changes I can make.

I’m continually refining the balance between what appeals to me online and what works in my real life. A room that looks perfect in a photo can sometimes feel cold or impractical at home, so I aim for warmth and personality rather than a picture-perfect but lifeless look. I want spaces that feel lived-in and welcoming, not just pretty for a snapshot.

In winter I often walk through the house and evaluate each angle. If something feels off, I treat it like a little project to improve over time. Progress is happening, but there are plenty of corners that still need attention. Since my resources of time and money are limited, I’m focusing on finding contentment and prioritizing the most meaningful updates. Instead of rushing to buy new furniture, I’m more interested in reimagining and repurposing what I already own. And I plan to do a lot of organizing—because clear spaces make a home feel calmer and more useful.
