Late this summer I brought a few new and secondhand pieces into our bedroom and I haven’t had a chance to share them here yet. With fall approaching, I thought an update about the room would be perfect.
If you missed my earlier posts, one of my best recent finds was a secondhand Ethan Allen Quincy bed from Facebook Marketplace. It was a dream piece for this room and I wasn’t expecting to find it so quickly, but it showed up on Marketplace and it felt like fate.
The bed fits the space beautifully. Its whimsical curves remind me of waves—the view from our island home looks out over the Salish Sea—so the shape feels very fitting. I love the chunky, solid wood frame; its weight gives the room a grounded and substantial presence. The robin’s egg blue finish keeps the overall mood soft and charming.

After the bed was in place, I started thinking about nightstands. The white ones we’d been using were too wide and didn’t suit the scale, style, or color I had in mind. Our bedroom is compact and the wall beside the bed has very limited space for furnishings.
On a walk a few weeks ago my husband and I popped into a vintage store that was closing. I wandered through hoping to find a small table that would be the right height and size. Given how specific the requirement was, I didn’t expect success—but then I found the perfect table. It was the right scale, shape, and a warm wood tone that complemented the bed.

There was only one of that table, not a matched pair, and that’s part of what makes a room feel lived-in and interesting. Imperfect or mismatched pieces add character and tell a story in a way identical sets can’t.
I planned to find a second table of similar size and scale for the opposite side so the two could read as a purposefully mismatched pair. We already had a pair of small white lamps and two vintage plates to hang above, so the asymmetry felt intentional and layered.

The next day we visited a local vintage market and I immediately spotted another table that was almost exactly the same size as the first. The wood finish was a touch darker, but that didn’t bother me—mixing wood tones adds warmth and personality. It even had a cute scalloped edge that echoed the curves of the bed and other pieces in the room. At $20, it was a steal and it fit the space perfectly.

Another item I wanted ahead of fall was a full-length mirror. Our closet is small, and we didn’t have a mirror large enough to get dressed in the room. I found a floor mirror with lovely texture and gentle curves that complements the coastal feel of the space. It can lean against the wall or be secured for safety, and it has the same soft shape language that ties several pieces together.

People often ask about our bookcase. It’s been in our family for years and previously sat in my dad’s home office. We painted it white in our previous house. I love its shape and base detailing—more subtle curves that echo the rest of the room’s furniture. It landed in the bedroom because we needed the storage and shelf space, and it has been very useful.

The teal chair has been in our home for many years and remains one of my favorite spots. Lily loves it too, and it’s become her resting place more often than the bed used to be. I also sometimes work from the chair with my laptop; in fact, I wrote much of this update while sitting in it.
Lily has started spending more time on the bed lately. Maybe she likes being closer to us now that she’s our only dog. She’s so sweet and I want her to feel safe and comfortable.

You’re invited! This fall in HomeBody Gathering Place we’re exploring practical and impactful design principles. I enjoy helping others with their homes, so I create exclusive lessons and teach our community weekly. Members can post photos, ask questions, and work on their rooms together. It’s a warm, encouraging group and I’d love for you to join.
This October in the community we’ll choose one room to transform into a cozier sanctuary. I’ll share tips and document the updates as I renovate a new room in our home that I haven’t shown here before. It’s a great way to make progress and learn together.
