A carved vintage wooden swan has found a new home in our living room, and it feels like the perfect addition. I love when furniture and accessories carry a story — they make a house feel layered and personal. This swan is exactly that: a meaningful, characterful piece that brings warmth and charm to our space.
This swan belonged to my mother for many years and now lives with us. She actually owned a pair; the other swan is at my daughter Kylee’s house. Having these family pieces around makes our home feel more connected and full of memories.
It was serendipity that I had placed a small drop-leaf table behind the sofa soon after my mom gifted us a bamboo cart. I didn’t expect to receive the swan, so it felt like a happy surprise when she set it on the table last week. The scale and presence are just right for that spot.
Here’s a similar drop leaf table!

The swan adds height and a decorative focal point behind the sofa, which is exactly the look I’d hoped to achieve. I wasn’t sure what piece would work in that spot until this swan arrived — it was a delightful match and arrived at the perfect moment.

Some readers have asked where these vintage items were while my parents moved into their Tiny Cottage. During their move and downsizing, my parents used a small storage room to temporarily hold things. When we visited family in Oregon they began sorting through those items. The bamboo cart and the swans were among those pieces, and my mom brought this swan here last week and placed it on the table for me. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and I’m so pleased it fits so well in our living room.

Moving and downsizing can be a big undertaking, especially when multiple generations share a home. Many people have asked how we managed the transition. It’s certainly a lot of work and planning, but ultimately it has been worth it. There’s a period of adjustment as you settle in and find places for special items, but the result is a home that feels intentionally collected and meaningful. I may share more details about our process in the future.
