Versatile Living Room Game and Dining Table for Small Spaces

A while back I mentioned the idea of placing a small round table in the corner of our living room. I finally gave it a try and wanted to share the progress.

I felt there was unused space in that little corner, so why not make it a purposeful, inviting spot? It didn’t need to be a major remodel—something simple and functional would do.

Originally I considered built-in bookcases and maybe even enclosing a closet for the master, which I still love, but those projects require time and commitment. For now, a round game table felt like an easy, affordable solution that could be changed later if I wanted.

I tried our dining table there first (with the leaves removed), but it was too large for the vision I had. I’ve used a smaller round table as an end table elsewhere in the house and it works beautifully—compact enough for a lamp next to a sofa, or between a sofa and a chair. That style with drop leaves is especially versatile since the sides can fold down when more space is needed.

To style the corner I gathered pieces I already had: a bench that usually sits outdoors, a rattan shelf from the dining room, a rug I had on hand, and a piece of flea market art from the dining area. Pulling together existing items is a low-risk way to test a new configuration.

This corner will likely evolve over time, which makes experimenting more fun. I often rearrange things around the house—trying new spots or configurations helps me decide what feels right without committing to permanent changes.

There’s no single correct approach to decorating. Give yourself permission to try, keeping in mind your taste, timeline, needs, and budget. If something doesn’t work, it’s easy to switch it up: remove items, simplify, or add new pieces until it feels right.

Shuffling furniture also helps me envision bigger, more permanent changes before making them. It’s a way to avoid costly mistakes by testing ideas in a flexible, temporary way.

I already have a few more updates planned for this room in the coming weeks, so everything is still in transition. For the moment, the new setup feels cozy and useful. It makes a pleasant spot to read or work—I’ve already used it as a small workspace.

We also plan to use it as an extra table at Thanksgiving, and it’s perfect for games, puzzles, or a candlelit breakfast or dinner for two. Its versatility makes it a welcome addition to our living area.

This J.R.R. Tolkien quote about the perfect home was featured in my book The Inspired Room (hand-lettered by my daughter). It still resonates with me.

What could be more perfect than a home that inspires you to live the life you want to live?

If you enjoy this kind of simple, flexible decorating, consider trying a small test arrangement in your own space. Use items you already own, live with the setup for a while, and adjust as you go.
