Summer Backyard Entertaining Mood Board with Project Sneak Peek

Our backyard is small, but I’m excited to make it charming and inviting. We already have a built-in gas firepit, and we’re adding a modest deck just outside the kitchen through the French doors. I picture a cozy seating area, plenty of potted plants, and climbing roses framing each side of the doors. My plan is to fill the space with flowers and greenery to create a little cottage-garden feel.

Beyond the joy of gardening, our design goal is to create a welcoming space for family gatherings on warm summer evenings. To get the design right, we start by imagining how we want guests to experience the space. As we picture people mingling, laughing, and relaxing, we ask: what elements will make the backyard comfortable and memorable? That intentional thinking matters most in a small yard, where every inch counts.

Get inspired for summer entertaining with this outdoor mood board!

I love mood boards because they help visualize not only how a space will look, but how it will feel—sensory details included. Looking at this board, I can hear cheerful conversation over a barbecue, feel the soft hum of background music, and picture pouring cold lemonade from a serving cart. I imagine the scent of roses on the trellis, the glow from the firepit, and friends gathered around to make s’mores. Those summer evenings are the reason I’m so excited to bring this backyard to life. Stay tuned to see how it all comes together.
