I’ve been putting fresh touches around the main floor this week—adding spring flowers, swapping in new pillow covers, and generally fluffing and tidying. While refreshing the space, I found myself preferring to call our little living room the keeping room.
Doesn’t that sound more inviting? I first learned the term years ago, and it perfectly describes how we use this area and why we reorganized our main floor (more on that below).
Below I share a few recent spring updates: affordable pillow covers, a practical idea for our dining bench, and other small changes that make the room feel seasonal and welcoming.

A small keeping room for spring, and every season
Homes & Gardens describes a keeping room as “a small, cozy space off the kitchen for guests, family, and friends to relax and socialize before dinner is ready.”
The phrase emphasizes the role of the room in “keeping” the household connected, which I love.
In colder months, we naturally gravitate here for the warmth of the fire. I often sit here alone with a cup of coffee, enjoying the quiet glow.
Historically, keeping rooms were common in early American homes where families gathered near the fireplace during long winters. They were places for conversation, play, and daily life gathered close to warmth.
While it’s the coziest spot in winter, the keeping room is just as special in spring.
This small room continues to draw us in. In warmer months we open the doors to let in coastal breezes or step out onto the tiny porch to watch sunrises and sunsets over the water.
It’s where we gather before and after meals, where grandbabies and pups play at our feet—a room that keeps family close.
Small rooms invite closeness, but they also encourage lingering and enjoying the seasons together. Being near the kitchen and dining area makes this space even more welcoming for family time.
Swapped the kitchen and dining room
When we renovated the main floor, we worked within the existing footprint rather than adding on. Our goal was to make all three small rooms feel connected and functional while preserving their warmth and charm.
We swapped the kitchen and dining room to improve traffic flow and added details that make the layout work well for our family while still feeling cozy for two. The result is a more practical, comfortable main floor without losing character.
Added seating and storage in small spaces
One renovation improvement was a bench seat in the dining area that maximizes both seating and storage.
Our bench cushion started as a simple DIY no-sew solution while we awaited a custom cover. That no-sew cushion has served us well for years. I often change the bench cover by wrapping different blankets or cloths around it for an easy seasonal update.
This spring I used a tasseled tablecloth as a bench cover and love the casual, washable option—perfect for when the grandbabies visit.
Created visual connections
With the dining and living areas more connected, it’s fun to mix and match pillows and patterns between the rooms. This creates a coordinated look while allowing each area to feel cozy and distinct.
I picked up a few affordable pillow covers for spring—a set of floral covers and a block print pair, all with charming ruffle trim. I also added a green set that mixes well with existing pillows, keeping the look seasonal yet versatile enough for year-round use.
Designed flexibility between rooms
Because the keeping room connects easily to the dining and kitchen areas, family members can move freely between spaces and still feel part of the gathering. We can expand seating or tables into either space for meals, games, or conversation.
Now the main floor can function as one large, open area or as two or three smaller, purpose-driven spaces—flexible and comfortable for our needs.
The renovation made our small home much more functional without adding on.
