It has always been my dream to design and build my own home. I enjoy imagining every detail, from the floor plan to finishes and fixtures, and thinking about how architectural features shape daily life.
At twenty years old I haven’t had the chance to build a real house yet. I have, however, designed many homes in simulation games—fun, but not the same as walking through a space you can live in. There’s something missing when a design stays on a screen: the texture, the light, the way a room feels in use.
If I ever build my own home, I plan to include as many thoughtful architectural details as the budget allows. Board-and-batten walls, arched openings, box-beam ceilings, built-in shelving, distinctive doors and other custom elements add character and longevity. These details turn ordinary rooms into spaces that feel intentional and welcoming.

Architectural details not only elevate style, they also improve function. Built-ins can maximize storage and reduce clutter. Archways and varied ceiling treatments create visual focus and define spaces without walls. Specialty doors—sliding, pocket, or paneled—add privacy and personality while saving space.
Even smaller touches—trim profiles, hardware, lighting placement, and thoughtful millwork—contribute to a cohesive home design. These decisions influence a house’s resale value and, more importantly, the everyday experience of living in the space.
And, because imagination is part of design, I wouldn’t rule out a playful idea or two. A secret passage, a hidden storage niche, or a tucked-away reading alcove can bring delight and surprise to a home’s atmosphere.
What architectural detail would you include in your dream home?
